So happy to announce that we are officially, as of February 23, the Umpqua Valley Beekeepers Association, the only nonprofit beekeeping club in the Douglas County/Umpqua Valley area of SW Oregon!
Swarm season is coming, and we're ready to go catch those girls! Our March meeting was all about what to do when answering a swarm call, from greeting the property owner, to what to bring, and how to safely bring your new bees home. We have a page on this website all about swarms.... and you can check that out here. This Saturday, March 11, is the Spring Into Gardening one-day workshop put on by the Douglas County Master Gardeners. UVBA member Cynthia Moyer will be teaching a Honeybees in Your Garden class as part of the line-up, and she will be bringing some UVBA beekeepers as well as an observation hive, so that will be awesome! You can register here or show up at the door. Classes start at 9. Cost for the day: $25. Spring Into Gardening Registration We have several things in the works for the club — possibly sponsoring the butterfly garden at Stewart Park, partnering with the city to place swarm catch boxes around the city parks as a way to redirect swarms — but also as a learning tool for the community, and our festival season is fast approaching. April's meeting will be full of all kinds of info on what we can do as a club. The sky is literally the limit. As temperatures start to warm up, our bees will start moving around, and they will be looking for forage and supplies. Part of UVBA's mission is to help beekeepers know what to plant in their yard for winter blooming options for our girls, so stay tuned for more on that. It may too late for this early spring season, but gardening is a long haul, so the best time to start planning for that future is now. Stay warm and we'll see you around the hives!

Hello and welcome to our new website!!
Our club has been Douglas County Bees for about eight years, but now we're moving into the future with a fancy new name and big plans to educate ourselves and the public about our favorite insect — the honeybee. The Umpqua Valley Beekeepers Association will focus on the entire Umpqua Valley, not just Douglas County. We will work with the Oregon State Beekeepers Association, as well as neighboring beekeeping associations, to help spread the word on what makes these insects so important. They are a part of our world now, despite not being native to our continent, but they're here, they're not going anywhere, and help us tremendously in our daily lives. Swarm season will be starting soon — as soon as this insane freezing weather leaves us — and then we'll be moving into festival season, starting with the Glide Wildflower Show in April. All of our festivals will be on this page, as we decide which ones we'll appear at. We try to bring an observation hive if at all possible, but that depends on how the bees are doing that day, the weather, transportation, etc. The bees come first. Our "Resources" pages will be filled over the next few weeks with plenty of information about the honeybee, beekeeping, gardening, the benefit of native plants, and especially how to get started if you haven't taken your first step. Let's hope January takes these freezing temperatures with her when she leaves! Cynthia UVBA Treasurer/Social Media Coordinator |
